Students from the Division of Natural Sciences Shine on the MCAT

August 9, 2024 (Marion, IN) – Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU) students enrolled in the Pre-Med Concentration of IWU Marion’s Pre-Health Care Sciences Program performed exceedingly well on the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT), which is the national standardized exam US medical schools use as a major part of their applicant evaluations. The current IWU applicants applying for admission to medical schools for the first-year class of 2025 scored an impressive percentile average of 83%, meaning that on average, the IWU students scored better than 83% of all medical school applicants nationwide, with one student even scoring in the top 100%.

Asked about the factors that contributed to these successes, Dr. Dan Jones, professor of biology, “IWU science faculty consistently strive to understand and encourage their students. These are obviously extremely bright, focused individuals. However, it doesn’t hurt that our PhD-trained faculty not only teach and mentor them in the class, lab, and research settings but are also involved in their advising sessions. An advisor who has an in-depth understanding of their advisees can provide the best, most tailored support for each student to achieve success.”

Dr. Kulaga, President of IWU said, “Our faculty and students work diligently together and strive for excellence in and outside of the classroom. I am so thankful for our faculty and their scholarly and particular approach to preparing students. It’s a true testament to the quality of our faculty and institution. Measures like the MCAT scores are great indicators of IWU’s intentionality and success in academia.”

Since its renaming in 2022, the Pre-Health Care Sciences Program has been on a steady upward trajectory in preparing students for medical careers and driving results needed to achieve students’ dreams. Congratulations to our faculty and students for achieving such high standards.
