IWU Announces Science of Reading and Literacy Instruction Graduate Certificate and Master’s Degree Programs

September 24, 2024 (Marion, IN) – Beginning October 15th of this year, Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU) will offer two new online programs in the Science of Reading and Literacy Instruction for educators wishing to become reading specialists or to understand how to approach literacy learning through the Science of Reading. Both a Graduate Certificate and a Master of Science degree will be offered.

The MS will consist of 10 courses over 20 consecutive months, while the Graduate Certificate will consist of 4 courses over 8 months. This program is specifically designed for individuals who are experienced classroom teachers or instructional coaches. This degree allows educators to pursue a role as a literacy coach or reading specialist in an early childhood, elementary, or special education setting, further their growth as classroom teachers, and learn to do action research with their own students or in their building.

This will be a highly practice-focused degree, and faculty are excited to continue updating the curriculum to ensure that this program stays as current as possible. All faculty are experienced educators with a minimum of a doctorate in education and come from varying experiences. Speaking about this new program’s desire to help students grow not simply academically but also spiritually, Program Division Chair Dr. Reuben Rubio II explained, “Through this program we desire to help our graduate student educators touch Heaven and change Earth. To touch Heaven means to help educators draw faith, inspiration, knowledge, creativity, tenacity, and ethical behavior from the Creator of the universe; to change Earth means to help educators use all of that to improve the literacy of their students.”

Faculty are excited for the launch of this program and look forward to helping educators make a difference in improving the literacy of their students.
