In January, Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU) student Kara Simison was selected from a pool of several hundred applicants to be one of 33 Indiana college students chosen as 2025 Indy 500 Festival Princesses. The annual selection of Princesses is a cherished tradition that has been celebrated for over a year. This prestigious program emphasizes scholarship, leadership, communication, professionalism, and community service. Selected individuals represent not only the 500 Festival, but also their hometowns and universities.

“I’m incredibly excited for this journey and grateful for the opportunity to be part of such an inspiring program,” Kara shared after her selection.

The time commitment required for the Princess Program is significant, with months of preparation and participation in events leading up to race day. Kara engaged in numerous community outreach initiatives leading up to the 109th running of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, May 25. The historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway served as the venue for this annual event, known for its unique road course features that challenge even the most skilled drivers. Her role included participating in statewide programs that celebrate the spirit and legacy of the Indianapolis 500, aiming to make a positive impact across Indiana. Each princess receives a $1,500 scholarship to assist with educational expenses, leadership development opportunities, and unique access to professional development and networking events.

When May arrived, Kara's schedule was packed with appearances and events happening all across Indiana. From the 500 Festival Mini-Marathon to the Breakfast at the Brickyard and the American Legion 500 Festival Memorial Service, Simison represented the Indy 500 Festival, IWU, and her hometown of Alexandria well.

Additionally, Kara was able to participate in the AES 500 Festival Parade and did a lap around the track on the day of the race.

“Through the Princess Program, I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to meet new people, grow in leadership, and experience the rich traditions of the Indianapolis 500 in such a unique way,” Simison reflected. The time spent at the Speedway and with the Princess Program has been invaluable, offering lasting memories and connections.

“This distinction allowed Kara to use her talents as a servant leader and ambassador to not only represent IWU well to those she meets, but also to represent the Kingdom of God well,” said Penny Callaway, associate professor and executive director of Government Relations at IWU. “Few students I know are so capable of holding scholarship, leadership, and faith in such strong combination, and Kara excelled through this unique honor.”

As a junior marketing student at IWU, Kara Simison has spent the past few years learning to champion organizations and individuals, showing what they can be like at their best, communicating what they stand for, and helping others see their potential. Her action-oriented approach and active engagement in community outreach have set her apart as a leader. Although she hasn’t yet graduated, her participation in the Indy 500 Festival shows she’s already on the way to becoming a world changer in her field.
