Dr. Alisha Mack, Associate Professor of Master’s Primary Care Nursing at Indiana Wesleyan University National & Global, co-authored a book titled Bioethics for Nurses: A Christian Moral Vision. The book, released in July of 2022, won 2nd place in the 2023 Catholic Media Book Awards and was featured in an article by Action Institute, a think tank organization dedicated to nurturing a virtuous society upheld by religious principles. Both acknowledge the value of educating nurses in Christian ethics.
The book, published by Wm. B. Eerdman’s Publishing Co., discusses nursing ethics from a biblical worldview. Co-author, Dr. Charles C. Camosy, a Professor of Medical Humanities at the Creighton University School of Medicine, is no stranger to book publishing, having authored seven books surrounding themes of ethics from a Christian worldview. Dr. Alisha Mack partnered with Dr. Camosy because of the lack of adequate resources in nursing education from a Christian perspective. She shares, “We decided to write this textbook when we struggled to find a nursing ethics book grounded in the Christian faith.”
Dr. Mack and Dr. Camosy address the specific ethical concerns for Christian nurses. Dr. Mack teachers her students from a Christian perspective and claims, “I believe it is impossible to understand what nursing is apart from deeply held beliefs and values. And for the countless number of nurses who identify as Christian, it is just as impossible to separate their calling as a nurse from their calling as a Christian. The hope of the book is to inspire and support those who have been called into nursing and who believe their faith is a vital part of who they are as a nurse.”
IWU benefits from nursing educators willing to create such a valuable resource to aspiring Christian nurses everywhere. Dr. Darla Gowan, Associate Dean of NP Programs for National and Global Nursing appreciates faculty like Dr. Mack who intentionally impact an industry for Christ through education programs. Dr. Gowan says of Dr. Mack, “We are so proud of the work she is doing in the area of biblical ethics. What a wonderful way to teach our students to be world-changers in their everyday nursing practice.”
The book is available as a textbook and can be purchased on multiple academic platforms and through Amazon. The acknowledgements Dr. Mack’s book recently received demonstrate its effectiveness in higher education and serves to train nurses through many case studies documented in its pages. IWU applauds Dr. Mack for her ongoing effort in educating future nurses from a biblical worldview and modeling “world changing” work.
