IWU Summer Saturdays: 5 Local Activities

Warm weather has officially arrived in Marion, and that means it’s time to get outside and soak up the sunshine. Looking for something fun to do around campus this summer? We’ve got you covered with a few local favorites that are perfect for a Saturday adventure.
1. Garfield Trail
Did you know Jim Davis — the creator of the Garfield comic strip — is from Fairmount, Indiana? In honor of his beloved, lasagna-loving feline, Grant County is home to 14 unique Garfield statues scattered between Fairmount and Upland, making the Garfield Trail a one-of-a-kind attraction.
Make it your goal to visit each one this summer. Grab a friend, your phone and hit the trail for a quirky photo challenge. Be sure to see the statues in person to fully appreciate their charm. Garfield is a character known around the world, and this trail celebrates his global appeal. Start your adventure at the first statue on the trail for the perfect introduction to this fun journey.
Exact statue locations can be found here.
2. Marion Courthouse Square Farmers Market
One of the best parts of summer? Fresh, local produce. Instead of heading to the grocery store, swing by the Marion Farmers Market downtown on the courthouse square. It’s held every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
From farm-fresh veggies to homemade goods, it’s the perfect Saturday morning outing. Bring a burlap tote, a few dollars in cash and your favorite iced coffee — then take a stroll while enjoying the sights and sounds of the local community.

3. Matter Park
Need a spot to soak in the rays? Matter Park is your go-to. With everything from a unique butterfly garden to pickleball courts, it offers something for everyone. When you visit, make the butterfly garden the first thing you see—it's a highlight you won't want to miss. You’ll find plenty of shaded spots to read, reflect, or just enjoy the breeze.
Matter Park features three unique activities: the butterfly garden, disc golf course, and the Cardinal Greenway scenic walking trail. Feeling more active? Explore the walking trail, play a round of disc golf, or rediscover your inner child at the playground.
4. Stop for a Sweet Treat
Hot summer Saturdays and ice cream go hand in hand — and thankfully, Marion has some great options. Whether you’re team soft serve or love a classic milkshake, check out:
- Ashley’s Ice Cream Café (downtown Marion)
- Sophie’s Ice Cream (Gas City)
- Ivanhoe’s (Upland — yes, it’s worth the drive)
5. Sunset Hammocking on Campus
Wrap up your day back on campus with a peaceful sunset hammock session. With plenty of sturdy trees and hammock-friendly structures, campus is the perfect place to rest and reflect.
We recommend setting up near the Prayer Chapel. You’ll catch a beautiful sunset and end your Saturday in stillness and gratitude.
